1hief Ethanol, a cornerstone of Chief Industries, has been a pioneer in ethanol production for decades. As we celebrate its successes, we reflect on the incredible journey of innovation, resilience, and community impact that has defined its legacy. Wayne Garrett, General Manager of Chief Ethanol, shares insights into the company’s evolution and its exciting future.

The Evolution of Chief Ethanol

Chief Ethanol’s roots trace back to 1985 when the Hastings plant was established. By 1990, Chief Industries had created Chief Ethanol, setting the stage for growth and innovation. Over the years, the Hastings plant expanded from a modest 10-million-gallon operation to a 70-million-gallon powerhouse, making it the longest continuously operating dry mill ethanol plant in the U.S.

In 2006, the Lexington plant was introduced, and Chief acquired it in 2016. Together, these facilities now produce a remarkable 125 million gallons of ethanol annually. This milestone underscores Chief Ethanol’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability.

Challenges and Triumphs in Ethanol Production

Ethanol production isn’t without its challenges. From market fluctuations to workforce dynamics, the industry demands adaptability. Yet, Chief Ethanol thrives by being innovative, investing in cutting-edge technology, and fostering a passionate workforce. The rural communities of Nebraska provide a talented pool of individuals who are integral to the plants’ 24/7 operations.

Beyond Ethanol: Diversified Products

While ethanol remains the flagship product, Chief Ethanol maximizes the potential of every corn kernel. Distillers grains, a high-quality animal feed, and corn oil are valuable by-products. Annually, Chief Ethanol produces approximately 1.6 billion pounds of animal feed, benefiting local livestock industries and contributing to a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

Innovations and the Future of Ethanol

The future is bright for Chief Ethanol, driven by innovations like carbon capture and sequestration. By capturing and storing carbon emissions from the fermentation process, Chief is poised to reduce its carbon footprint significantly. This initiative is equivalent to removing 74,000 cars’ worth of emissions annually.

Strategic partnerships, such as those with the Renewable Fuels Association and the Nebraska Ethanol Board, amplify Chief Ethanol’s impact. These collaborations promote education, market development, and sustainable farming practices.

Looking Ahead

As Wayne Garrett highlights, the industry is evolving, with national acceptance of E15 fuels and ongoing research into ethanol’s potential. Chief Ethanol’s commitment to smart farming, climate-conscious practices, and innovation ensures it remains a leader in the ethanol industry.

Chief Ethanol’s  journey is a testament to the power of innovation, community, and sustainability. As we look to the future, the company’s vision promises exciting advancements and continued contributions to Nebraska’s agricultural economy.
